It is always difficult to put out our inner experiences.
By looking at these images we feel amazed and able to reflect more deeply
about their meaning. The journey in the slums of Messina stems from
the awareness that there are just outside the worlds that we are so
distant from our everyday experience from us yet prove that feeling
of amazement that feeds the reflections in front of some images. Photographic
language, which is different from verbal code, can better describe the
emotions which we can’t describe through words.
Photographic language is more suitable than words
to represent the world around since it reproduces reality as it is.
The images of this virtual travelling are tied to that world, they are
a print of a world unknown to most people, only a few of them can know.
Of course the author of these photos knows that he can’t tell
everything about such a difficult subject but he is sure that he can
push people to think about them so that they can’t forget everything
when they end to look at the photos.
Each photo represents only a little part of something
that we will build with our mind after the sight of the images. As in
every journey we should look at the photos with the eyes of travellers.
The starting point of this work is the need to make people be aware of
such a worrying reality in Messina. We mustn’t forget; we’ll
be living if we are able to get angry when we see such photos!!
Surely reality is always more intricate than the
one described by a camera. Behind the images there are the stories of
the lives of people so we can’t only look at them but we should
go beyond and try to understand their problems. WE mustn’t forget
that the problems of those who live near us are also our problems even
if we don’t want to come trough.
The world described by the camera is the world
of the “suburb culture” because there is a sense of resignation
for a life which is completely different from the life of modern civilized
societies. There are a lot of causes for this and it is difficult for
us to discover their reasons but if we want something to change we should
look at this reality with different eyes and try to do something without
prejudices .
